In Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca, the rich and varied artistic traditions of more than a dozen ethnic groups converge in its vibrant eponymous capital city. Here, you can hardly walk a cobblestoned block without stumbling upon an impromptu market—or a lone Zapotec man who has artfully arranged the rugs made by his family alongside a graceful colonial-era building. Everyone in Oaxaca, it seems, is an artist, whether they're throwing barro negro pots in the village of San Bartolo Coyotepec—the glistening onyx color comes from polishing the piece before firing it—or intricately embroidering blouses in the tradition of nearby San Antonino Castillo Velasco. No wonder Oaxaca City has become prime hunting ground for professional shoppers, from top hotel designers to fashion moguls like Kate Spade. (Bargain prices, charming hotels, and all that fabulous food certainly don't hurt.) Where should the novice begin? The locals' favorite market, of course: You'll find all manner of handmade crafts (and snacks!) at the four-acre Central de Abastos, which abuts the downtown, and tonier wares at the small shops in the city center. Follow our advice on what and where to buy, and when you're forced to pay the extra baggage fee on the flight home, don't say we didn't warn you.
